Independence square in Sumy is the historical and administrative center of the city. This site began development of the city in the mid-17th century, when its founders - Colonel Gerasim Kondratyev and Governor Cyril Arsenyev - began to implement their plans for the construction and arrangement of known Sumy fortress, which was based Sumy Cossack regiment.
In 1694, there was built a wooden Church of St. Nicholas. Today it resembles only a wooden cross, as the Church itself was destroyed by the Communist barbarians in the 1930s In 1702, after the death of Colonel G. Kondratiev was completed the construction of another Church of the resurrection Cathedral, which now forms the centrepiece of the Sumy area. Formed around churches, squares and resurrection of the Nikolaev later merged into one.
For a long time the area was called Peter's - in honor of Peter I, who came here on the eve of the battle of Poltava. After the Central area of the city has been traditional in the USSR for space name - Lenin square. In 1982, in a sign of consolidation of title in its center was a monument to Lenin. Its modern name - the Independence square – the square was in 1991, after Ukraine's independence. In 2001, she was dismantled monument to Lenin.
Today Sumy on Independence square is a beautiful building with a tower Dating back to the late Stalinism and the building of the regional Council, the hotel and the Registrar, which are not of great architectural value.
