7 km on Southeast from the capital of Kefalonia Argostoli, above the village of Peratata is Saint George's castle, or rather the ruins of once majestic buildings. This ancient fortification is one of the most famous historical attractions of the island.
The fortress of St. George is located on a hill, with a height of approximately 320 m. the most Likely area in the vicinity of the castle has been inhabited since ancient times, as have been found near the Mycenaean tombs. The first written sources attesting to the strengthening of this hill belong to the Byzantine period (12th century). The location of the castle was of great strategic importance, and its walls are well protected from pirate raids.
Castle in the form that we see today was built by the Venetians in the early 16th century and until 1757 was the capital and administrative centre of the island (known as Kastro). The building has a polygonal shape and covers an area of 16000 sq. m. It was a well fortified city with residential and public buildings, food stores, hospitals, prison, etc. Next to a small area on the territory of the locks today you can see the ruins of the Catholic Church of St. Nicholas. After another earthquake, the inhabitants of the fortress, gradually moved in a well-protected natural harbour, where he founded a new capital (Argostoli).
The abandoned castle was thoroughly hurt and in 1953, when the island was struck by a major earthquake, but, nevertheless, the massive walls stood. Subsequently underwent a partial reconstruction of the castle, and today it is open for visiting.
From the top of the fortress of St. George offers stunning panoramic views.
