The reserve of Vendicari", located in the province of Siracusa, between the towns of Avola and Pachino, covers an area of 1500 hectares, Is the most southern marshes of Europe and its unique ecological importance of the place – dozens of species of migratory birds stop here during their seasonal migrations. The best time for observing birds – December, when the birds fly from the hot Sahara on their nests in Northern Europe. Great chance to see Plovers, grey herons, flamingos, wild ducks, gulls, cormorants and black-winged stilts. Among the animals of the Park you can meet hares, foxes, freshwater turtles, hedgehogs, various frogs and numerous snakes.
In addition, the reserve is home to several interesting archaeological sites, which were detected vessels from ancient fish farms and the remains of a small necropolis. Preserved watch-tower, erected in the Middle ages, and several of the buildings of the Hellenistic and Roman periods. In the Western part of the reserve, near the town of Noto, you can see a small Roman Villa decorated with mosaics.
Vendicari, taken under protection in 1984, can also boast an incredible variety of ecosystems: there are rocky and sandy shores, shrub areas, fresh and salt marshes, salt lakes, heathland and cultivated fields. In the past the salt lakes were of paramount economic importance and, of course, was provided by advanced tuna fishing that existed on the territory of the reserve in the 15th century.
You can get here in different ways: one entrance is located in the town Eloro, the other near the cava delle Moscow, with its famous beach of Cala Moscow, another access point is located in Cittadella dei McCurry, the site of an ancient Byzantine settlement, where today are visible the ruins of a small temple and necropolis. Finally, the main entrance to the reserve is by the tower Torre Sveva with the surrounding a gorgeous beach.
