Museum Skugor is the only Museum in Denmark, dedicated to the artistic legacy of one of the family – Cougar. It is located in the heart of Viborg, in the old town hall from the 18th century. Here, not far from the Cathedral of Viborg, presents the work of four generations Shugarov and their contemporaries.
In 1726, a fire destroyed much of the city, including the Cathedral, which is then reconstructed. However, in 1863, the Cathedral was again burned down and was rebuilt again. Several decades later it was decided to decorate the walls of the Cathedral frescoes. Artist Joachim Cougar was a young student-artist, helped paint the walls of the Cathedral. From 1901 to 1906 with several assistants Joakim Cougar did the job by writing 51 of the fresco. City officials were so proud of the new design of the Cathedral, I decided to pay tribute to Joakim Shugoro, built a Museum for him. The young artist has asked that the Museum presented not only his work, but his whole family, as many members of his family were also gifted artists. In return, the family had to donate to the Museum a private collection of his paintings.
In 1937, the Museum was opened in the building where he is now. Up to that time he resided in other areas, close to the Cathedral. The collection of paintings has expanded over the years, this was facilitated by donations from family, as well as acquisitions made by the Museum itself. Today the Museum contains not only a collection of pictures painted by family members Cougar, but also the work of their contemporaries, thereby presenting visitors with a rich collection of works of art 1830-1960-ies. In addition, the Museum presents collections of furniture, silver and ceramics.
The Museum has a gift shop and a coffee shop where you can relax and have a snack.
