Viborg Cathedral is one of the most historically important Danish churches. The current building was built in the 19th century.

Even before the Viking age, the Viborg was one of the four most important religious centers of ancient Denmark. Viborg Cathedral was the place where 1065, was an Episcopal see. In 1080 Danish king Knut IV donated a few farms on the maintenance of the Cathedral and diocese.

In 1501, a fire damaged the Western part of the Church and destroyed the roof. It was restored by executing a new roof in red brick, the most common building material of the time. By 1530, the Church passed into the hands of the followers of the teachings of Martin Luther. Many Catholic priests were sent to prison for disagreeing to pass new laws and move to Lutheranism. Despite the desire of Viborg to the new, he retained many of the Catholic traditions much better than other cities of Denmark.

Fire again damaged the Church in 1567. In view of the lack of funds to repair the Church was closed, and from 1800 to 1814 was used as storage for grain. In the second half of the 19th century the Cathedral was rebuilt of brick from the old Church are preserved only Romanesque crypt. In 1876 the building was completed, and the Church was consecrated.

In 1899-1914, the artist I. Cougar painted walls and vaults of the temple of the frescoes of biblical subjects.
