Church of Panagia Chalkeon – Byzantine Church dedicated to the virgin, in Thessaloniki (the capital of Greek Macedonia). The Church is located in the historical centre, close to the famous via Egnatia and the Roman forum. According to the dedicatory inscription, which can be seen above the main entrance, the Church was founded in 1028 by Christopher, Royal protospatharius and catapano Longobardi. It remains today lie in the arkosolii the Northern wall of the temple.

Church of Panagia Chalkeon - the temple of the cross-domed type. The main dome (octahedral with two tiers of Windows) is supported by four marble columns in the Central part of the temple, having the shape of a square and two smaller domes are located above the porch. The chancel of the Church has three apses - the altar and the vestry. Numerous arches adorn the facade of the building, thus giving the temple a certain elegance. The temple is built of red brick, in this connection, it is often called the "Red Church".

In the 15th century the Ottomans converted the Church into a mosque, giving it the name Kazancilar Camii, which means "mosque coppersmiths" (geographically, the temple was located in the area where the copper workshops). It is believed that this led to the modern name of the Church "Chalkeon".

In 1912, after the liberation of Thessaloniki from the Turks, the Church was abandoned and only in 1934 restoration work began under the guidance of Demetrius of Evangelidis. The Church was able to recreate almost intact. To this day preserved and unique frescoes of the 11th and 14th centuries, however, for the most part they are in pretty poor condition.

Church of Panagia Chalkeon is one of the most important historical and architectural monuments of the Byzantine era in Thessaloniki. In 1988, the Church, along with other early Christian and Byzantine monuments of Thessaloniki were included in the list of UNESCO world heritage site.
