Among the abundance of interesting sights of the capital of Greek Macedonia Thessaloniki special attention deserve the ruins of the Roman forum (Agora), located in the historic centre of the city. The Roman forum was built in the late 2nd century BC on the site where once stood the ancient Agora and up to the 5th century BC was the administrative centre of Thessaloniki, playing a huge role in the political, economic and social life of the city.
The ruins of the Roman forum of Thessaloniki were only discovered in the early 1960-ies. The remains of structures and unique ancient artifacts found in the excavations have yielded invaluable information about the history and culture of ancient Thessaloniki.
The forum covers an area of about 2 hectares and consisted of a complex of buildings that housed various government agencies (including the Mint and the city archive), public baths, shops, craft shops, Odeon, etc. because Of the natural slope of the ground surface on the South side, the forum had a two-tier structure (the so-called Upper and lower Agora). Upper Agora was a rectangular paved square, surrounded on three sides by two rows of columns, which actually was located in the building. Lower same Agora consisted of a vaulted basement galleries.
Today the Roman forum is an important archaeological and historical monuments of Thessaloniki. After the restoration work archaeological site open to the public. On its territory (in a renovated underground galleries) there's also a very interesting Museum of the Roman forum.
