The impressive castle of Chapels is one of the main cultural attractions of this ski area, located in the Eastern part of the valley of Alta Pusteria, located mostly in Italy. The imposing ruins of the castle above Passendorfer near Sillian, exalted not only above the valley of the Val Pusteria, but over lying opposite the valley of Val Curtiz. Castle of Chapels was built over several centuries, and the oldest parts date from the 13th century. The Central part of this medieval defensive structure consists of a 20-metre tower and the adjoining rooms. The West wing of the castle is the largest and most well preserved. It is a room with stucco decoration, dated to the 18th century, is the so-called Rittersaal.

In the 13th century the castle Chapels was owned by the lords of Garcia, who founded here a military base. After 1500, the year he died last representative of that noble family, the castle became the property of the Emperor Maximilian I, who was forced to give it to the Bishop of Bressanone. And soon the castle again changed owners – this time they were lords Wolkenstein-Trostburg. In 1613 year, the majority of the structure was destroyed in the terrible fire. Subsequently, Trostburg sold the castle to the state, and that, in turn, referred it to the jurisdiction of the municipality of Chapels. In 1977, the year the castle became private property.

All that is left from the once impressive castle Chapels came round and rectangular watch towers, an impressive dungeon, courtyard and 38 of the embrasures. Also well preserved is the so-called guard posts, which did not allow the enemies to climb the walls.
