Jerusalem tower in Trier – the oldest building of the complex, which is called Walderdorff the Palace. It is known that the building was built back in the 11th century, moreover, the shape and dimensions of the tower were characteristic of urban development in those times. There was mentioning that the total number of such towers in Trier was nine, but today the Jerusalem tower is perhaps the most well-preserved example of the architecture of those times. By the way, it is unclear why the building was named, nothing to do with the Jewish religion, the building was open.
Thick walls indicate that at the time the tower was part of the city fortifications. There is information that the masonry used by the builders, was exactly the same as some ancient Roman buildings. Thus, a special method of laying large bricks contributed to the special stability of the building. The original building had five floors, standing on a solid stone Foundation. Over time, the walls were imposed new layers of plaster, but not so long ago, restoration works were carried out and found authentic features: arches, aligned walls, which are decorated in a special way, allow to speak about the use of the building as a chapel.
In 1869 in Trier the fire raged, suffered from it and Jerusalem tower. The first floor was buried and forgotten for centuries. In the last century excavations were carried out that allowed to find evidence of the medieval tradition, because there was a spiral staircase, and a massive pillars supporting the upper floors, and Windows with deep niches.
Today, the Jerusalem tower is a three storey building that blends seamlessly into modern buildings. The good location the tower is one of the items on city tours.
