The Gates Of Serranos Photo: The Gates Of Serranos

The gates of Serranos are one of the two surviving ancient city gates, which can safely be called one of the main attractions of Valencia. This is a Grand, powerful and majestic building was built by the architect Pere Balaguer in 1392-1398. Built in the Gothic style, Serranos gate was originally conceived as a military building and were supposed to protect the city from hostile invasions, but most often they were used for official ceremonies and proclaim the will of the crown.

Towers built of stone and limestone are connected by a gallery wall with an arched entrance and is decorated with carvings and bas-reliefs, executed in the Gothic style. On the tops of the towers have observation decks with railings, which offer beautiful views of the city and surrounding area. On the facade facing the city, there are large holes in the form of an arch that once served as tribunes.

In 1865 it was decided to demolish the city walls, part of which was the gate and the towers of Serranos. Left them due to the fact that, starting from the 16th century until 1887, the building of the towers was used as a prison for nobles and knights. During the civil war in Spain, the tower was used as storage for valuable Museum activities and exhibits.

Currently the gates and towers of Serranos play an important role in interesting Valencian tradition – they announce the start of the most important in the life of the city festival, which is called "Las Fallas".
