Fort St. Elmo is the main fortification of the city and is situated at the tip of Cape Valletta. During the great siege in 1565, the Fort was badly damaged from the Turkish bombing and after the victory was almost completely rebuilt. The Fort also suffered heavily during the Second world war. Today it houses the national war Museum.

In the Museum you can see the German torpedoes and torpedo boats, Italian and German anti-tank guns, military uniforms of the twentieth century, masks, as well as the cross of king George, promoted to Malta on 15 April 1942.
