The island archipelago of Juan Fernandez is in the Pacific ocean, 670 km from the coast of Chile. Spaniard Juan Fernandez first discovered these Islands at the end of 1574. They were called Mas-a-Fuer, Mas-a-Tierra, and Santa Clara. In 1966 the first two Islands was renamed Alejandro-Selkirk and Robinson Crusoe, respectively.

Robinson Crusoe island was inhabited in 1877. The local population of the island is about 640 people. Almost all live in the capital city of San Juan Bautista and on the coast of the North island, in the Bay Cumberland – they go sea fishing and cater to tourists.

On the island of Santa Clara live 20 fishermen during the fishing season of lobster fishing from October to may.

The archipelago of Juan Fernandez attends a few tourists, because to come to the island only by plane, waiting download 10. The airport is not here, only the runway, which is located on the Peninsula of Punta Truenos, and thence to sail on a small vessel to San Juan Bautista about two hours, or sail to the island on the ship plying once a month, or on a cruise ship.

These Islands are inhabited by goats, which are called by the name of the archipelago – goats Juan Fernandez. Earlier this subspecies of goats was home, and eventually became wild.

Currently, the archipelago Juan Fernandez is a biosphere reserve and is under UNESCO protection.
