The Museum of paleontology is located in the town of Elena and is Popnikolova house, one of the oldest houses which remained with the revival period of Bulgaria (XVIII-XIX century). The Museum is an architectural monument and monument building of national importance. In 1980-1981, this building was completely renovated and handed over to the University of Sofia St. Kliment Ohridski in educational and scientific purposes. At that time in the basement floor arranged paleontological Museum, which was created under the idea and under the supervision of academician and Professor Todor Nikolov. He was awarded the degree of Honorary doctor of the University of Toulouse in France.
In the Museum of paleontology, visitors can see various materials from the collections of Todor Nikolov and senior researchers of stoycho Peskovskogo and Kristalina Stoykova. In addition, here are some of the finds that were discovered by students during their teaching practice in the town of Elena – the remains of various prehistoric animals, fragments of minerals, etc. On other floors Popnikolova house and to this day I study and work with students and faculty of the University of Sofia.
The building itself is also of particular interest, because it is a typical building of the Renaissance period. It was erected about 1830, facades to the streets of Karlowska and Stephen Yovcheva. From the street this house is on three floors – ground floor and two upper, and inside there are only two floors.
This building known as "Old engineering", as at first, in the first years after the Liberation, here was the city's maintenance team. Later, in 1973, the building was officially declared an architectural monument.
