State Museum of art of Novgorod land was founded in 2002 in Veliky Novgorod. The Museum is located on the territory of the tithe monastery, which is a monument of architecture of the XIV century, In 1170 at this place, during the famous battle of the Novgorodians with the Suzdal was made a miraculous icon "the Sign", according to legend saved Novgorod. The creation date of the monastery is the year 1327.

In 1994, the Regional training Center of artistic creativity. In spring 2002, the center received the status of State Museum. The initiator of the opening of the Museum is Gavrilova, Galina Viktorovna, who became its first Director. From 1994 to 2002 as the Center of artistic creativity held great practical and organizational work for the discovery of talented craftsmen and artists, passionate about all kinds of art on the territory of Novgorod region and attracting craftsmen exhibition activities. An extraordinary exhibit of the Museum is the Church of the assumption, which is on Volotovo field, near Great Novgorod. The first Novgorod chronicle States that the Church was built by order of the Archbishop Moses in 1352. Ten years later the Church was painted. The Church walls were decorated with nearly 200 compositions. During the second world war the Church was destroyed. Preserved outlines of the walls and pillars from two to four feet tall. Russia and Germany in 2001 signed an agreement for the provision of grant aid in the rebuilding of the temple and its murals. Restoration of rare monument was carried out in 2001-2003. On the walls were preserved areas of ancient painting.
