Santa Maria dei Carmini, also known as Santa Maria del Carmelo or just Carmini, is a small Church in Venice's Dorsoduro quarter. She huddles next to the former Scuola Grande di Santa Maria del Carmelo. This religious brotherhood was founded in 1597 year and has grown from a women's charitable organization "Pinzochere dei Carmini". Members of society are often attributed to the Carmelite order, because they were engaged in embroidery monk's shoulders for the Carmelites.
Originally the Church was named Santa Maria Assunta, and the first mention of it dates back to the 14th century. In the facade of brick and marble preserved sculptural lunettes, Giovanni made the Buor, and among the decorations you can see images of the prophets Elisha and Elijah, who are considered the founders of the Carmelite order. The bell tower, built by the architect Giuseppe Sardi, topped by a statue of the Madonna del Carmine, made in 1982, the year the sculptor Romano VIO. This statue is installed in place of the original, which was destroyed by a lightning strike.
The altar and side chapels of the Church were rebuilt in 1507-14-m years by the Swiss Sebastiano Mariani from Lugano. Inside one can see a grandiose monument of Jacopo Foscarini, former Procurator of San Marco and the naval Admiral. Family Foscarini Palace is located opposite the Church on the other side of the channel. The second altar is decorated with the work of CIMA da Conegliano's "adoration of the Magi". From other works of art it is worth noting the Pace Groove and Giovanni Fontana, statues by Antonio Corradini and Giuseppe Torretti, bronze angels on the balustrade – the work of Girolamo Campagna, wooden pediment with carved Francesco Bernadone and the ark Giovanni Scalfarotto. Also in the Church you can see many magnificent frescoes and stucco work and to enjoy a beautiful altar-piece, Jacopo Tintoretto the mid-16th century.
