National prehistoric Museum Balzi Rossi is a cave not far from Ventimiglia, located almost on the border with France, one of the most important in Europe archaeological sites. The caves are located near the village of Grimaldi – they are formed in high rock, steeply to the sea. The name they got for the red color of the walls. The first researchers in the area were the French scientist De Saussure and Prince Florestan I of Monaco. And at the end of the 19th century on the initiative of the Englishman Thomas Hanbury, who fell in love with this part of Liguria, was established archaeological Museum.
Today reliably we can say that in the caves of Balzi Rossi since the lower Paleolithic was inhabited by primitive people, and during the upper Paleolithic, they were adapted for the crypt. The Museum with its models of caves in different time periods provides a unique opportunity to trace the history of local settlements. And among the most prominent places can be called "Triplice Sepoltura" Triple tomb, which was discovered in the grotto Barma Grande. In the tomb were found the remains of an adult male unusually high growth of 190 cm and two young men – they were all buried in one pit. In the same grave were found a variety of funerary objects. Another important burial is in the grotto Grotta dei Fanciulli – there were found the skeletons of two children and a huge number of shells. Human remains found in the caves, belong to the so-called Grimaldi race and belong to a group of CRO-magnons.
In the caves Barma Grande and Principe were also found 15 carved bone figurines, the so – called Venus, which represent a female figure with large Breasts and hips, which apparently were a symbol of fertility. Important findings are the fossil remains of elephants, rhinos and hippos, as well as reindeer (the latter belong to a later geological period). And one of the most interesting sights of Balzi Rossi is the image of the Przewalski's horse, made by primitive hedonsim about 20 thousand years ago.
