The folklore Museum was founded in 1895. After its opening, the Museum was located in the building of the stock exchange, and in 1917 opened in the Summer Palace of schönbrunn. The Museum showcases a rich collection of folk cultural heritage of Austria and neighbouring countries. The bulk of the collection covers the period from the 17th to the 19th century, demonstrating daily life, folk architecture, domestic needs and concerns.

Exhibits and archival photographs show different types of houses, agricultural farms, interiors, furniture, dishes and other familiar objects of everyday life of that time. In addition to the interior in the Museum you can see everyday and special occasion outfits, jewelry and accessories. Some of the exhibits devoted to folk art preexisting Austro-Hungarian Empire, including musical instruments and objects of religious rites. Separately, the visitors can get acquainted with the rural culture of the Alpine region.
