The Artist's House Photo: Artist's House

Vienna House of artists is the venue for art exhibitions. It is located on Karlsplatz near the Ringstrasse.

The artist's house was built in 1865 -1868 years of the Austrian artistic community, the oldest community in Austria, and has served since then, the exhibition centre of painting, sculpture, architecture and applied art.

The architect of the building was August Weber (1836-1903). When the building was used by several types of Austrian stone. Emperor Franz Joseph I laid the cornerstone. The opening took place on 1 September 1868. The artist's house was designed in the Italian Renaissance style. The building was extended at the beginning of 1882, having a pair of lateral wings, which later housed a theater (1949) and theatre (1974), and in 1882 passed the "First international exhibition of art".

In the 20th century the building of the House of the Artist was unusually low for a developing Ringstrasse. The authority was offered or agree to the demolition of the building or, at least, to rebuild it greatly. In the early 1930-ies it was proposed to replace the historic pavilion at the new eight-storey block houses.

Another noteworthy incident was the plan Carla Svancara in 1966 to build the IBM offices on the site of the House of the Artist. This proposal was met with great disapproval among citizens and the media. Rising wave of protest has saved the building from imminent death. However, talking about the demolition of the building up again and again in the present.

Today, the artist's House is a two-storey exhibition space of 2,000 square meters with plenty of activities. Media forums, exhibitions, summer festivals and various thematic debates are held here all the time.
