The Church of Steinhof, also called the Church of St. Leopold, located in Vienna, on the hill at Steinhof psychiatric hospital. Considered one of the most interesting among the churches in the style of art Nouveau in the world. Built by the architect Otto Wagner. The design of the Church was engaged Koloman Moser (stained glass), Otmar of Simkovic and Richard Luksha.
The idea to build a clinic for the mentally ill appeared in the early 20th century due to the great popularity of psychoanalysis and treatment of mental disorders in Vienna. At the clinic, Steinhof, it was decided to erect a Church, which was consecrated in honor of St. Leopold. It was built on a hill with a height of 310 meters in 1907. Otto Wagner built a Church in his trademark style: blue color, gold plated, forged elements. Around the perimeter are figures of saints, among which is the figure of St. Leopold, holding a miniature replica of the Church itself. They say that in this copy you can see the figure of St. Leopold.
The interior of the Church was created to account for the fact that the laity is mentally ill. Therefore, within the Church, with capacity for 800 worshippers, no sharp corners, and the altar is separated from the hall. The Church is separate for men and women, and benches separated by different categories of patients. In the temple service provided exits for emergency evacuation of patients when needed.
The Church for a long time was restored and opened in October 2006. Interestingly, the image of the Church Steinhof was chosen for commemorative coins 100 Euro, which was minted in November 2005.
At the present time the Church is open for visitors-tourists.
