MUMOK stands for "Museum Moderner Kunst" Museum of modern art Ludwig Foundation in Vienna. It is located in the Museum quarter.

The Museum has a collection of 7,000 works of modern art, including major works by Andy Warhol, Pablo Picasso, Joseph Beuys, Nam June Paik, Gerhard Richter, Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein and others.

MUMOK was opened on 20 September 1962 as the "Museum of the 20th Century" in the Swiss garden. The building served as the former fair. First the founding Director of the Museum was Werner Hofmann. For several years, he succeeded in acquiring significant works of classical modernism and in a sequential build-up of an existing collection. From 1979 to 1989, Director of the Museum was the art historian Dieter Ronta.

At its present location, in the historic centre of Vienna, the Museum of modern art opened its doors to the public on 15 September 2001. Cubic basalt Museum building was designed by the architectural Bureau Ortner and Ortner. Outside, the building looks like a dark, closed block, the roof is low and is curved at the edges. The Museum exhibition space is 4800 square meters and includes over 7,000 works.

Since its inception, its primary mission, the Museum considers the preservation and expansion of collections of 20th and 21st centuries, as well as support innovative research. One of the major challenges was and still is the desire to convey the historical and theoretical foundations of art in public education in the form of publications and scientific events. The Museum sees one of his main objectives in the thematic coordination of exhibitions, which allow a deeper understanding of art.

Being the largest Museum in Austria, covering the period since the advent of modernism, MUMOK promotes the integration of important Austrian positions in the international context. As a state institution, the Museum seeks to engage in solving social and political problems.
