In northwestern Spain in the province of Pontevedra, belong to the community of Galicia, is a small port city of Vigo. This ancient city which was founded by the ancient Romans. The whole history of Vigo is inextricably linked with the sea, shipping and fishing. No wonder it is one of the most interesting Spanish museums dedicated to the sea, Galician Maritime Museum. The Museum was opened in 2002. The building, which houses the Museum, was built by architects Aldo Rossi and Cesar Portela.

The Museum is mainly devoted to the Maritime history of Galicia and people relevant to it. Among the permanent exhibitions of the Museum there is a collection dedicated to the Galician fishing industry, shipbuilding in Vigo, naval battles that occurred off the Northwest coast of Spain, the history of the Galician fleet. Among other exhibits, the Museum presents a large number of archival documents. The interior of the Museum is equipped with the latest technology: the exhibits are the original illumination, interactive displays and screens showing a documentary video allow in full to receive the information. The building of the Museum is adjacent aquarium, where visitors have the opportunity to see various species of marine animals and fish living in local waters.

On the basis of the Museum is a scientific activity, as well as being aimed at the conservation of natural marine resources.
