The last two centuries of the Holy spirit monastery is one of a kind Orthodox Church in Vilnius. The Church was named in honor of the Descent of the apostles the Holy spirit and is the most important monument of architecture and history of Lithuania. It is located near the gates of dawn in the Old town. Holy temple preserves the incorrupt relics of the great martyrs Eustathius, John and Anthony.
As you know, in 1596, was concluded the Union of Brest, which implied the unification of Poland and Lithuania into a single state. Tough times for Orthodox believers – closed all the churches in Vilnius, and Holy Trinity monastery passed into the hands of the Uniates.
In this situation, the people fought hard for the return of the Orthodox Church. Getting constant refusals, the believers did not give up, and in 1597 permission was obtained from Sigismund III for construction of a new Orthodox Church across from Holy Trinity monastery. The Church was built on land that belonged to Dorothea-Anna and Theodora, and later she was transferred to the property of Holy Trinity brotherhood. Since that time, the brotherhood began to wear the name of the Holy Spirit, and to the temple were added to the printing-house, almshouse and school. This temple became the representative of the Orthodox faith in Vilna.
Built at the temple school consisted of several classes. Specially for students was published Slovenian grammar" and "Vocabulary". It is for him, attended by thousands of people, and especially proud of the temple is the fact that the school did Mikhail Lomonosov.
