Art Museum to Gran Vasco is located near the Cathedral of Viseu, in a renovated former Episcopal Palace of the XVI century. In the Episcopal Palace at that time was also the College-Seminary, because in the sixteenth century Catholic priests were required to teach the youth and therefore it is often possible to hear that this Museum is in an old Seminary.
The Episcopal Palace was built over many years. The Museum was founded in 1916 and was named after the famous masters of painting of the Portuguese Renaissance Vasco Fernandes, known as the Gran Vasco. Under his leadership, was opened in Viseu school of painting. The basis of the collection of the Museum were paintings to Gran Vasco and other artists collected by the collector Almeida Moreira.
The main exhibits of the Museum are considered to be the altarpiece of the images that were created specially for Viseu Cathedral. Among these works are the main altar, which was created while still a beginner artist by Vasco Fernandes. Exhibited even the altars of the later period of creativity Vasco Fernandes. Some of these altars Vasco Fernandes did together with Your Gaspar, his first disciple. Also among the exhibits there and sculptural works, decorative art, art metal wares, paintings by Portuguese artists of the NINETEENTH and twentieth century. Exhibited among the exhibits and items for the service of the Liturgy, jewelry, painting and sculpture. Part of the collection includes porcelain and earthenware works by Portuguese artists, as well as the antique pieces of furniture.
From 2001 to 2003, the Museum was closed for renovations, and in 2004, re-opened its doors to visitors.
