St. Basil's Cathedral in Vitebsk – a monument of architecture of XIX century. Currently the main Orthodox temple of the city.
On the site of the Cathedral in 1758 was built a wooden Church for the monks of Trinitarians. In 1821 on the site of a wooden Church was built a stone Church in the classical style. Near the Church was built two-storey stone buildings for the monks. In 1831 the monks Trinitarians were expelled from Vitebsk, and the monastery was abolished. In a vacant building at first tried to open an orphanage, and then handed the former Church under the women's prison.
In 1858-1865 year on the initiative of the merchant of the first Guild Gregory Volkovich and donated funds, the Catholic Church was rebuilt in the Orthodox Church and consecrated in honor of the Holy virgin. Serious reconstruction was carried out in the Church for the anniversary of the 300th anniversary of the Romanov dynasty in 1913. Updated temple shone fresh murals, new front and a new dome.
With the advent of the Bolsheviks in 1930 in Vitebsk were closed all the temples. Once again, the churches opened during the Nazi occupation. People were so touched that was in the newly opened Church with tears in his eyes. In the temple of the Vitebsk Museum of atheism brought the relics of St. Euphrosyne of Polotsk.
During the fighting for the liberation of Vitebsk from the occupation, the building was very badly damaged. Until the 1980s, Vitebsk "decorated" gradually crumbling ruins of the Cathedral of intercession. From 1986 to 1990 was a thorough reconstruction of the temple. On the feast of the Intercession of the blessed virgin Mary in 1990, the first worship service was held.
