Annunciation Church in Vitebsk is one of the most ancient churches, restored in our time. According to the legend, the Church of the Annunciation was founded by Princess Olga, who stayed in Vitebsk on the way from the capital city of Kiev to Polotsk. When Olga was only built a wooden Church. A magnificent Church in the Byzantine style was built in the XII century. For its construction were invited craftsmen from the Byzantine, which is confirmed by archaeological survey. There is a legend according to which, in the Annunciation Church of Alexander Nevsky was crowned with his bride of Polotsk Princess Alexandra.
The Church prospered and has been updated several times. So, in the XIV century the Church was updated by the command of Prince Olgerd.
Hard times came to Orthodoxy after the adoption of the Union of Brest. Not spared the sad fate and the ancient Church of the Annunciation on the left Bank of the Western Dvina. In 1619 came into the temple the Uniates. But the Orthodox were warned and didn't leave them anything of value. Only the walls painted with beautiful frescoes.
In 1623 the Uniate Archbishop, the implacable enemy of Orthodoxy Jehoshaphat Kuntsevich ordered whiten frescoes of the Church of the Annunciation. In the same year there was an uprising, during which the Orthodox people killed Jehoshaphat Kuntsevich and dumped his body in the river. City court ordered for such a thing to take away from the Orthodox Church of the Annunciation, to demolish the dome and turn it into the Catholic Church.
In 1831, the Russian government returned to the Orthodox population of selected churches in the territory subject to him of the city of Vitebsk. The temple was reconstructed in popular in those days, the pseudo-Russian style.
The temple was seriously damaged during the great Patriotic war, but still resisted giving shelter to citizens who lost their homes. Closer to the end of the war in the Church, a miracle happened – opened themselves ancient frescoes. However, the Soviet government, leading a relentless struggle with the Church, in 1961 blew up an ancient temple. Collapsed arches, but the walls stood firm and faithful to defend at least the little that remained from the temple. So he stood in ruins until the present day.
In 1992 it was decided to restore the Church of the Annunciation. This had attracted historians, archaeologists and the best builders to restore the Church's original appearance.
7 April 2006 the Church was fully completed, painted inside with new frescoes and decorated.
