Vitebsk city Museum of soldiers-internationalists was created on 17 December 1992 on the initiative of Vitebsk, Union of veterans of war in Afghanistan. In February 1996 the Museum was opened for visitors.
The idea of creating the Museum of the Afghan war emerged in the late 80-ies. In Vitebsk the Palace of pioneers was established search team "Red jib". High school students collected memorabilia of fallen soldiers Afghans, arranged of commemorative events, exhibitions. A search party was created by a large number of documents, photographs, personal belongings and other artifacts that later became the Museum.
The Museum consists of three halls with a total area of 136 square meters. Opens the Museum is a statue of a soldier holding his dying friend. The first room tells the history of the country Afghanistan, its cultural traditions, about the beginning of the war. The exposition is called "Afghanistan. As it was... ". The second hall is dedicated to the 103rd guards airborne division, stationed in Vitebsk and exercising international duty in Afghanistan. The third is the hall of sorrow. Here is a story about the lost young boys, about their military exploits and fates. The history of illustrated letters home soldiers, photographs and photo albums, diaries of the dead guys. The Museum also houses a large collection of weapons, uniforms, special equipment since the Afghan war.
The Museum set itself the goal of perpetuating the memory of the heroes of the Afghan war. The younger generation knew and understood what war and how it began, to not forgotten the names of the fallen heroes.
