In the heart of the city of Kamyshin, Volgograd region is a monument to the legendary pilot-fighter Alexey Petrovich Maresyev, established in may of 2006. The author of the monument is the honoured artist of Russia Sergey Shcherbakov. The idea of erecting a monument near the house where he was born and grew legendary pilot, came from residents Kamyshin after the death of Alexei Petrovich in may 2001. Alexey Petrovich, born in Kamyshin in 1916, became known worldwide after the release of the novel war correspondent B. Field, "the Story of a real man", where he became the prototype of the main character - a pilot Meresyev. In April 1942 the aircraft Maresyev was hit and Alexey Petrovich was forced to land in enemy territory. Badly wounded pilot eighteen days crawling to get to the front line. The heroism and courage Maresyev left without legs, but rose again in the sky and passed through the war as a Hero of the Soviet Union, has touched the hearts of people.

On solemn opening of the monument in Kamyshin arrived representatives of the command of the Russian air force, relatives Maresyev, the Governor of the Volgograd region and Metropolitan of Volgograd and Kamyshin. The square flew the SU-24, but immediately after the opening of the monument was the military parade saluting military honors.
