40 kilometers from the city of Volgograd on the Volga river Bank are the remains of a ruined medieval town. This famous archeological monument – Vodianskoye the settlement.
Scholars who have studied ancient Chronicles, suggest that this settlement during the heyday of the Golden Horde was mentioned in written sources under the name Bezdezem, or Benjamin. Even before Benjamin was mentioned in the writings of Arab travelers Abutendi - in the XIII century.
During the archaeological excavations from 1967 to 1974, researchers have revealed the remains of a mosque, near the Muslim cemetery. Among the ruins of houses and was the structure with the characteristics of public baths. In addition, were found objects, relics, archaeologists have suggested that near Belcamino existed Russian settlement. Probably hence arose the second Russian name Bezdezh. By the way, Benjamin translates as the "city of oaks". And it's no coincidence that in the XVII century, nearby there was a village called Dubovka. Disputes about whether Vodianskoye the settlement legendary Belcamino, still underway. Undoubtedly only that the outdoor archaeological monument has obvious signs of culture of the Golden Horde.
The present condition of the settlement is causing anxiety and concern of the scientific community. There is a significant risk of slipping of the object in the Volga. There are clear signs of the barbaric activities of the "black diggers" - a lot of broken shards of pottery, human remains, the remains of ancient bricks. However, Vodianskoye the settlement entered in the register of monuments of Federal significance and status should consequently be protected. It seems that Tamerlane destroyed the city in the fourteenth century, was more civilized than our contemporaries.
