One of the most popular places in the city of Volkhov, located in the Leningrad region, has become the city's history Museum, which is a favorite destination not only residents, but also visitors to the locality. The Museum is located at the address: Oktyabrskaya embankment, 27.

The Museum is housed in the house of academician Genrikh Graftio Osipovich. As you know, Genrikh was the author of the project and the main head of the Volkhov hydroelectric power plant. Pretty vintage house of a prominent Soviet power and the engineer was built in the period from 1923 to 1924. The house was for special techniques commissions, which often came because of the construction of hydropower plants. The Soviet academician Cabinet was on the ground floor, which also housed two guest rooms; on the second floor was spacious bedroom designed for him and his wife Antonina Adamovna which, in time, his personal Secretary. The Museum has held various techniques of government delegations, famous writers or poets. In the biggest room of meetings were held regarding operational issues.
After the construction of the HPP was completed, the house more than once changed its owners.

During the great Patriotic war, and some time afterwards the house was used by the military Committee of the town of Volkhov. In the period 1960-ies in the house was arranged Home school students and pioneers. Today the house is Russian academician Graftio is the historical monuments of Federal value.

The opening of the Museum of city history took place in the autumn of October 3, 1969. On the creation of the Museum were thrown all social forces of the city. The first initiative to establish the Museum showed the members of the cultural Department of the Volkhov City Council. Later they were joined by folk Museum, created with the Executive Committee, and then the locals enthusiastically supported this idea. The most active part in collecting the necessary information was received by the inhabitants of the city, among which worth mentioning Mokshanova M. G., P. D. Korchagin, Timenew G., Elkina V. I., Mogutov I. Y., Zakova J. A., Andrianova T. P., and many others.

The exposition of the Museum of the city amounted to photographs and various documents relating to the period of construction of the Volkhov hydroelectric station. Also there are photos and original documents of the period of the great Patriotic war, the archive of the engineer and energy Graftio, as well as a lot of material relating to the modern city of Volkhov. The Museum collections number about 11 thousand units.

Open Museum exhibition materials and documents, tells the story of the small village of railwaymen called Zvanka is the most populous point that existed at the time of education and formation of the city of Volkhov in 1933. Historical development of the city can be traced by taking a dip in the beginning of the 20th century, namely in 1904, when there was the building of a railway line connecting Vologda and St. Petersburg. In this section are detailed the most significant periods in the development of the Volkhov.

Within the Museum exhibition exhibited paintings the collection of paintings belonging to Alexander Gailis – talented Volkhov artist. As you know, the Volkhov river is particularly famous for his paintings on wood, which cannot be compared with anything else and which is clearly expressed in the symbols of the three natural elements – sky, earth and fire.
