Sakhalin art Museum in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk is one of the youngest museums in Russia and the only art Museum in the Sakhalin region. It is located in a building built in the architectural style of art Nouveau. Museum building, built in 1930, lined with embossed walls and decorated with Doric order and concrete stucco. The author of this project was made by a Japanese architect.
Formerly, the building housed a Japanese Bank Hokkaido Takushoku" after - the Sakhalin branch of the State Bank of the USSR. However, in the 1980s the building was reconstructed and donated them to the Museum. To date, the Museum building is a historical and cultural monument of the Sakhalin region.
Sakhalin art Museum was founded in August 1983 To February 1987, opened the first temporary exhibition in the Museum in the House of officers of the Soviet Army in the city of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk. In March 1989, opened a permanent exhibition in the building.
Currently in the Museum are more than 11 thousand exhibits. The Museum collection consists of eight sections. Part of the Museum's collection, visitors can see by visiting the temporary exhibitions in the great hall and the Museum hall on the first floor. With regard to permanent exhibitions, they are located on the second floor.
In the hall of Christian art exhibited amazing pieces of copper casting, icon-painting of the XVII-XXI centuries, copies of ancient murals, A. Krylov. Russian art of XIX – beginning of XX century is represented in the academic landscape of the second half of the XIX century V. Boehringer, N. Dubovsky, J. Clover, A. Meshcherskaya, A. Egorova, P. Bryullov, L. Lagorio, L. Turzhansky, R. Falk, V. Meshkov, and so on. The main asset of the collection is the painting "the Magdalene on the background of rocks", which was found in a private collection. In addition to paintings, the exhibition can be seen chamber sculptures and bas-reliefs. The Museum also features a unique collection of works of art from the countries of the Far East.
Every year in the halls of the Sakhalin art Museum opens new exhibition.
