The Museum of naive art – Museum of fine arts in Zagreb, Croatia dedicated to the work of artists primitives of the 20th century. The Museum collection consists of more than 1,850 works of art, including paintings, drawings, sculptures and engravings mostly Croats, but there are also other well-known international artists of this genre.
In 1952 in Zagreb was founded Peasant art Gallery. In 1956 it was known as the Gallery of primitive art and was part of the Municipal Gallery (now the Gallery of modern art). Since 1994, in accordance with the decision of the Croatian Parliament, the Croatian Museum is called the Museum of Naive Art. From the outset, the Museum operates under a strict museological principles and is considered the world's first Museum of Naive Art. Since 2002, the Museum focused on coverage of schools and students and intensification of training each year prior to the International day of the Museum.
Naive, or primitive, primitive art is an independent segment of art of the 20th century. Naive art has appeared in Croatia in the early 30-ies. Naive art was connected with the work of peasants and workers, of which the most successful over time, it became professional artists. Naive art are the artists that are somehow self-taught, have not undergone special training, but who have reached a high level of art. Recognizable individual style and poetic nature distinguishes artists primitives from "fans". Look primitivist typically displays unusual proportions and certain non-Boolean form and space. Thus, the artists Express their creative imagination by analogy with other areas of art of the 20th century, including symbolism, expressionism, cubism and surrealism.
Croatian naive art is also seen as a democratic movement, which proves that regardless of formal training, anyone can create a work of art. Common themes of work include such as "joy of life", "lost childhood", "interesting in the world", etc.
In the Museum collection, the focus is on Croatian artists famous Khlebinsky schools and some independent artists. The collection includes works since 1930. Known Ivan Generalic was one of the first naive artists in Croatia, who developed a distinct creative style and have attained a high professional level in his art. In the 30-ies is dominated by social issues, while in later works shown idealistic landscapes that give the imagination more space than the images just open space. The work of the second generation Khlebinsky school artists (50-60) figures include the burlesque and the grotesque, as well as works inspired by biblical themes with a strong use of colors.
The Museum organizes special exhibitions with a focus on individual artists or to highlight certain aspects of naive art.
In the gallery of modern art exhibited the most complete collection of paintings, sculptures and drawings 19-20th century Croatian artists. A collection of about 10,000 works of art from 1934 in the historic Palace Branican in the centre of Zagreb.
Modern art gallery and original for Croatian national art dates back to the early 1900 when it was founded by the artistic society of the paintings and sculptures acquired by its members and donations from the Bishop, J. J. Strossmayer. In 1905 purchased 3 work in Foundation future Gallery of modern art. The collection grew gradually and until 1914 was provided only to interested persons. As the collection expanded, in 1934, the gallery moved to the current building. Palace Branican was built in 1882. Gorgeous styles of the past were replaced by the contemplative atmosphere of the Gallery of modern art.
Complete reconstruction of the Palace took place from 1993 to 2005, when the current exhibition was presented to the public. Two floors of the Palace are modern equipped with galleries representing visitors to the permanent collection of the Croatian modern painting and sculpture. In a completely renovated historic rooms, the gallery presents "200 years of Croatian visual arts (1800-2000)", a representative sample of 650-700 best artists, sculptors and manufacturers of medals. Gallery of modern art became the most famous and complete Croatian Museum of modern art. Since 1960, there are retrospective and monographic exhibitions of works by famous Croatian artists and thematic exhibitions of Croatian and European modern art.
In addition to the permanent exhibition, Modern art Gallery holds special exhibitions. In 2009 he created a multi-touch Tactile Gallery, which aims to help visually impaired visitors to experience the main features of Croatian contemporary art through touch and sound.
In 2010 was opened a new multimedia exhibition, titled "the Iconography of cities in the Croatian art of the first half of the 20th century". The viewer presents the motif of the city in drawing, painting, graphics, art photography: on posters and in movies, in literature and music. The exhibition includes more than 150 works.
