The Church of Agios Dionysios one of the most impressive structures of the picturesque Greek island of Zakynthos. The temple is situated on the promenade of the town of Zakynthos (Zante), and its impressive bell tower is the first thing guests see the island, arriving in the port of Zakynthos. The Church of Agios Dionysios one of the few buildings of Zante enough had survived the catastrophic earthquake of 1953.

The temple got its name in honor of Saint Dionysios is the patron Saint and one of the most revered saints of the island of Zakynthos. Saint Dionysius (in the world of Dragonage Seguros) was born in Zakynthos in 1547 to a family belonging to a noble Venetian family, and was known as a highly educated person. In 1568 he became a monk, and two years later was ordained a priest. In 1577 he became Archbishop of Aegina and Poros, but soon renounced his title and returned to their homeland, as the Abbot of the monastery. After the intrigues of ill-wishers and slander was relegated to the status of a simple village priest, which, however, did not prevent him to win the love and great respect of the people of Zakynthos. The last years of his life, Saint Dionysius held at the monastery of Anafonitria, where he died December 17, 1622. In 1703 Saint Dionysius was canonized Patriarch of Constantinople.

The Church of Saint Dionysios is the main temple of the island and the impressive luxury interior - excellent wall paintings and stunning icons, among which the works of such famous Greek painters as Doxaras and Ketosis. The main relic of the Cathedral are the relics of St. Dionysius, stored in a carved silver box.

Twice a year, on 24 August and 17 December, the inhabitants of Zakynthos with panache celebrate the Day of Saint Dionysius. After the divine Liturgy, the clergy accompanied by a solemn procession partake in a procession with the relics of the Saint. These days the island is visited by many pilgrims who wish to honor the memory of St. Dionysius, and to venerate the Holy relics.
