The castle of Duino, located a few kilometers from Trieste on the Adriatic Riviera of Italy, has a long and very illustrious history. It was built in the 1300's, on the ruins of a Roman Outpost on a steep cliff facing the sea. This place offers beautiful views of the Bay, and the castle Park with his bunker during the Second World war and the path of Rainer Maria Rilke gives an idea of the typical landscapes of Northern Italy.
Of Duino castle is a massive structure with a tower of the 16th century. It is next to this tower once existed another, more ancient castle, probably dedicated to the cult of the Sun God. And today Duino associated with the tragic legend of the White Lady. The name of this came to light because of the snow-white cliffs, which can be seen from the sea and which has the outline of a woman, wrapped in a long veil. Over the last 400 years the castle of Duino is the property of the princes von Thurn und taxis who live in it. From 2003, the majority of the castle on the initiative of the owners is open to tourists who can explore the rich collection of works of art and historical relics.
Once in the castle stayed mysterious poet Rainer Maria Rilke, who wrote the first two of his Duino Elegies.
