Fano is a popular seaside resort on the Adriatic coast of Italy, the third largest city in the Marche region after Ancona and Pesaro. According to the latest census, there are about 65 thousand people.
Fano stands on the very spot where the ancient Flaminia the road comes to the Adriatic sea. In Roman times the city was known as Fanum Fortunae – the Temple of Fortune. Here lived retired soldiers of the Roman Empire. By order of the Emperor Octavian Augustus in Fano defensive walls were built, some of which have survived to our days, and a triple arch, also survived.
After the attack the Ostrogoths in the first half of the 6th century Fano became part of the Byzantine Empire and then became part of the Exarchate of Ravenna as the center of Marine Paygrade, which was also part of Rimini, Pesaro, Senigallia and Ancona. In the 15th century in the city the rule of the Malatesta family, one of whose representatives, Sigismondo Pandolfo – erected a fortress here. Then Fano became part of the Papal States. On the initiative of Pope Pius V in the 17th century was built the harbour, which in the First World war, was subjected to massive bombing. Still more terrible destruction brought by the Second World is then destroyed all of the ancient towers and bell towers of Fano.
Today surviving monuments of history and architecture Fano can be examined, for example, Rocca Malatestiana, the oldest of which belong sushestvovala here before the building of Ancient Rome, or the Palace of the Corte Malatestiana, built in the second half of the 14th century. The latter is a huge room with vaulted ceilings, a former probably part of the first residence of the Malatesta family, and a small tower. The original building is preserved Lancet Windows in the Gothic style staircase and a covered gallery. The court with the help of modern bridge is connected to another Palace Fano – Palazzo del podestà 13th century, which today houses the archaeological Museum and art gallery. Among the religious buildings Fano allocated Cathedral of the 12th century, the Church of San Francesco with the tomb of Pandolfo III Malatesta and his wife Paola Bianchi, Santa Maria Nuova 16th century with the works of Perugino and San Paterniano 16th-century. Outside the city in the town Bellucci stands the Church of San Sebastiano, for construction of which the materials used from ancient Cathedral.
