Aegina is a picturesque Greek island in the Saronic Gulf. This is one of the most famous and popular Islands of Greece with well-developed tourist infrastructure and lots of interesting sights.
Archaeological Museum of Aegina is the oldest Museum in Greece. It was founded in 1829 under the guidance of renowned Greek historian and scholar Andreas Moustakidis with the assistance of the first President of Greece, Ioannis Kapodistrias. Initially, the Archaeological Museum housed in a neoclassical building in the centre of Aegina (island capital). The modern Museum building was constructed in 1980 in the vicinity of the capital on the territory of the archaeological site "Column". The building is a single storey brick building with tiled roof and an atrium in the center, the perimeter of which are indoor wooden porches. On one of the outer sides of the building also has a covered portico.
The Museum collection is extensive and varied and perfectly illustrates the history of cultural development of the island of Aegina, from prehistoric times until the early Christian period. Unique ancient artifacts have been collected from all corners of the island. The exhibition presents various ceramics, sculpture and statues, architectural fragments, funerary steles, archaic inscriptions, weapons, coins and more.
One of the most valuable exhibits of the Museum is a marble statue of the Sphinx (5th century BC), found in 1903 in the Column. No less interesting and beautiful collection of pottery in the geometric style, fragments of sculptures from the temple of Apollo, bronze vessels (1900-1800 BC), ceramic vessel depicting scenes from the Iliad (the escape of Odysseus and his comrades from the cave of the Cyclops), as well as the inscriptions from the temples of Aphaia and Apollo. Of great interest and an accurate model of one of the houses excavated in the Column and Dating from the 3rd Millennium BC, the Complexity of the design, no doubt, indicates a relatively high level of development of the technology of the period.
