The Panagia Tripiti Church not only one of the most popular attractions of the Greek city of Aegion, but also one of the most revered Orthodox shrines of Greece, which is visited annually by thousands of pilgrims from all over the world. Virgin Tripiti is revered by locals as the patroness of the city.
The temple was built in an amazingly beautiful location - right in the coastal cliff at a height of nearly 30 m above the sea level. According to local legend it was here in the mid-16th century and was discovered a miraculous icon of the virgin, which today is the main relic of the temple. Found the Shrine traveler, miraculously survived after the ship on which he sailed was wrecked off the coast of the Corinthian Gulf. Cutting through the darkness to the divine light coming from the icon, saved the traveler, putting in his path and giving strength to reach the shore. On shore, the traveler soon found in the cleft of the rock and the light source – the icon of the virgin, before which he knelt, prayed and thanked them for their salvation. Subsequently, he took monastic vows and became the first Minister built a temple here.
Its present form the Church of Panagia Tripiti've already received in the 19th century. Great architectural building designed in a neoclassical style and is literally surrounded by picturesque gardens. From the coastal road to the temple is an impressive marble staircase, consisting of 150 steps. On the first floor in the narthex you will find the Holy source from which water is considered curative. To this day preserved frescoes of the 19th century and some old icons.
Friday of Bright Week (the day of memory of the Mother of God is the official religious holidays of Greece and one of the most important celebrations in the Egion. Every year on this day, accompanied by solemn escort miraculous icon of our lady of Tripiti makes its procession through the streets of the city.
