On the right Bank of the Sura river, opposite the city of Alatyr is a specially protected natural territory - Alatyr arboretum named after G. A. Sulima-Samuelo formed in order to preserve and enrich the flora, as well as for scientific, educational and training activities.

The national arboretum was founded in 1960 enthusiastic nature lovers headed by a member of the civil war and labor veteran Gregory Biological Sulima-Samuelo. The initial area of the Park was no more than ten hectares and it was called "Alatyr pioneer Park arboretum". Under the direction of Gregory Anisovich within twenty years the organizers of the Park cooperated with many domestic and foreign reserves. The result of the work of enthusiastic growth in the Park rare plant species from the Baltic States, Ukraine and Altai, the Urals, the Far East and Siberia, as well as unique specimens from Tibet, India, China and Japan. In 1973 Alatyr arboretum was awarded a diploma of VDNH of the third degree, and in 1978 he won first place in the competition especially valuable forest sites of the RSFSR.

In our days Alatyr arboretum covers an area of more than 230 hectares and is one of the best collections of valuable plant in Chuvashia. In the forest grow more than a hundred species of plants, of which particularly stand out: far Eastern cherry, Ussurian pear, Manchurian walnut, Siberian fir, Altai cedar, Chinese Magnolia vine, Japanese spirea and red barberry. One of the alleys of the Park bears the name of the first cosmonaut - Yuri Gagarin.

Alatyr arboretum borders the Park "at the grove, the river is Deep and the river Sura, presenting a scenic attraction for tourists and a great place for townspeople.
