A part of the architectural ensemble of the Old Market square (now the October Revolution) is the Treasury building, which houses Alatyr Museum of art. A one-storey building of the Museum, who lost in the twentieth century architectural frills and decoration of the facade, was built in the 18th and 19th centuries for the County Treasury, approved in January 1781.

Art Museum in the city of Alatyr was opened in March 1993 as a branch of the Chuvash state art Museum. The initial exposition of the Museum consisted of two hundred graphic works and paintings, transferred Alatyr Museum, 32 paintings from the national art gallery and 53 of the graphic works of the artist-teacher D. S. Shuvalov. In 1995, the art Museum became an independent municipal cultural institution.

In our days the Museum Fund has more than three thousand items, of which about two thousand works are a major Fund. The Museum presents works Alatyr artists and those whose creative activity and life were associated with this region from the nineteenth century to the present day. The exposition of the Museum includes works of painting, graphics, sculpture, decorative-applied and folk art. The main exposition of the Museum consists of works of graduates of Alatyr art and engraving school, which made a major contribution to the history of Russian national art Chuvashia, Tatarstan, Mordovia, such as: N.Masons, B. Belousov, S. Skryabin, E. Nozdrin, V. Kotelkin and many others. The Museum regularly hosts exhibitions of contemporary artists.
