The crown of the historic city of Alatyr is called the Cathedral of the Nativity of the blessed virgin Mary standing on the left Bank of the Sura river. Founded the Cathedral, and adjoining the Baptist Church, in 1550-ies, during the construction of the fortress city Alatyr.
In June 1770 the means of bourgeois Bogolyubov was built warm stone building of the Cathedral with a five-sided apse, three-tiered bell tower and a small refectory. From the South and North of the quadrangle adjacent side of the room, in terms of forming a cross. The Central part of the temple is adorned with a dome and a dome on a circular drum. On the second tier of the Western part of the quadrangle there is a choir. The design of the facades is low-key decor. The temple, like the preceding, was consecrated in honor of the Nativity of the blessed virgin.
Like many temples of Alatyr, Nativity Cathedral was destroyed in the 1930-ies. The bell tower was destroyed, and ancient wall paintings was completely destroyed. In 1993 the Cathedral was returned to believers.
In our days the building has been completely restored and is an architectural monument. Feature Alatyr Nativity Cathedral - a modern Battistero (baptistery). The landscaped area of the Cathedral and next to the temple is a wooden structure in the old Russian style with a cupola.
Within the Cathedral is the oldest Cathedral Church of the Chuvash Republic of the beheading of John the Baptist 1703 buildings and Nikolo-Znamenskaya Church, built in 1779.
