In the historical part of Angers under the open sky is another interesting attraction is the Botanical garden Jardin de Plante, also known as the "Garden of plants".
It broke in 1740, the founder of the society of Amateur botanists Luthier de La Richelieu. After almost half a century the society has decided to expand its Botanical possessions and bought a plot of land on which stood the Church of the Abbey of Saint-Serge and through which a stream ran. To its present location, the garden was moved in 1791, at the initiative of botany Gabriel Merlo de La Baule. At the end of the XVIII century on the territory of the garden were held lessons in botany.
Today in the garden you can see the building of the Church of St. Samson, which is considered the oldest surviving churches in Angers. The date of its construction – 1006 year. Despite the venerable age of the building, in the nineteenth century it was adapted into the greenhouse. In 1972, the Church received the status of a monument of history.
In 1901, considerable damage to the Botanic garden hurricane. In the early twentieth century, the appearance of the garden has been recreated and slightly modernized landscape architect Edouard andré. Currently the garden is about four hectares, on which grow many old and rare trees. The Park features statues and fountains, paved walkways. The Botanical garden became a haven for several species of birds and boasts a rich collection of plants.
In Angers, you can visit other, no less beautiful, green spots – for example, the arboretum Gaston Ayar, located on the outskirts of the city. It is named after the scientist who planted here the first plants. The garden was founded in 1863 and today it extends over seven hectares. On its territory you can see rare plants and a variety of conifers. The expanse of the arboretum are the sculptures of artist françois KASHO, they were installed there in 2001.
