Castle Anif Photo: Castle Anif

Castle Anif stands on an artificial pond in the same city Anif on the southern outskirts of Salzburg. The exact date of origin of the castle is still not installed. It is known that in the year 1520, on this place there was already a castle that belonged to Prononcera. But since 1530 the castle Anif is constantly referred to as feudal wore issued to the Archbishop of Salzburg. Later the castle was given to the bishops of Chiemsee, which subsequently used it as a summer residence until 1806. The last of the bishops defeated the English Park around the castle.

In 1803, during the German mediatisation of the Salzburg Archbishopric was transformed into Kurfurst to Ferdinand III. Two years later, in 1805, under the terms Presburger world, the territory of the electorate that were previously Archbishopric, became part of the Austrian Empire. So, Anif castle Park passed into public ownership.

Although the castle was leased from this point on, the tenants were not taken to begin restoration. The situation changed when the property was sold to the grandson of the Empress Maria Theresa, count Alois Steppers in 1837. He rebuilt the Palace Anif between 1838 and 1848 in neo-Gothic style, giving the castle. Until that time, it consisted of a simple four-storey two-storey house and go to the chapel.

After the death of count in 1891, the castle became the property of his successor Sophie, who married count Ernst von My de Jans, from old French aristocratic family.

In 1918 Anif attracts public attention, when the Bavarian king Ludwig III and his family and entourage fled here to escape the revolution. In "the Anif Declaration," written 12/13 November 1918, Ludwig III refused to abdicate, but he released all Bavarian officials, soldiers and officers from their oath.

During the Second world war, the Germans were housed in the castle, and then the American division in 1945.

Currently Anif castle is in the possession of the family de Jans. The castle is closed to the public.
