Nature's gate - is one of fifteen natural monuments, protected in the territory of Chile; located 18 km North of Antofagasta.

National monument La Portada rises to 42 meters above sea level. To his relief, formed as a result of abrasion of volcanic rocks, sedimentary Sandstone layers and layers of fossil shells (from 35 to 2 000 000 years), covers an area of 31, 27 ha. This place, along with a stone moai statues of Easter island, is one of the most popular in Chile. Millions of tourists from all over the world come to the country to see this amazing sight.

For thousands of years as a result of erosion of sedimentary rocks by the wind and sea water formed carved caves, rocks and arch La Portada. Natural gates are surrounded by coastal cliffs with a maximum height of 52 meters.

From a distance the arch looks like a large island with a fluttering sea birds - gulls, pelicans and ducks. On its edges resting sea lions and penguins, and then, you can watch shrimp, octopus, colorful jellyfish, sea turtles, dolphins and sharks, which this place is not suitable for bathing.

In 1990 had been pledged to the arch of La Portada in the list of natural monuments of Chile. From 2003 to 2008, access to the Outlook of this natural monument remained closed due to the collapse of a significant portion of their rocks that blocked access to the shore. Now admire this amazing experience, riding up to the upper terrace on the highway Antofagasta, where are the Parking, balconies, restaurant and exhibition halls.

This sector has two trails for Hiking. Top the path - length of 70 m on the upper terrace (50 m above sea level) with access for people with disabilities and lasts 10 minutes. This way you can also approach the biology Museum Mirador. The second way is with a ladder, which allows you to go on the sea shore. This road has no access for people with disabilities and has a duration of 40 min. But since August 2013 has been closed due to the risk of rockfall.
