Famous Arkhangelsk compound of the Solovetsky monastery, historically, invariably linked to the process of founding of the city of Arkhangelsk, and (c) the period of its institution, which belongs to the late 16th – early 17th centuries. In those days, the Archangel was an old ancient fortress, and his farmstead was originally located in the area of the citadel.
In 1637 there was a terrible fire, which burned almost all the fortified structure, and the compound has moved a little closer to the location of the market, namely "the George swos". Arkhangelsk compound played the role of economic epicenter in the city. It is known that in those days Solovetsky monastery received income from salt production, fisheries, and he also sent their products to Arkhangelsk for sale. Then the monastery is very needed warehouses, cell buildings and retail outlets.
In 1667, the composition of the compound is already included four large wooden buildings that serve as a granary, cells and cloister. In 1729 the compound had seven spacious separate buildings that served as the rectory mansion, office buildings, barn, cellar, bath and seven retail outlets.
It is rather difficult to imagine the original appearance of the farmstead and its location. It ignited a fire in 1733, 1745, 1793. But still, considering the accepted tradition to build new buildings on previously existing locations, we can conclude that the location of the monastery stood on the site of "St. George's swasa".
In 1797 for the needs of a farmstead of a wealthy merchant Becker was acquired by a large stone house, which was located between the common house and a post office. These buildings were built according to the developed project, which is a stone house with small outlets at the bottom and living quarters at the top. Over time formed the structure of the block where the still standing buildings.
In the early 19th century Archangel compound gets a stone building, and soon after buying a few urban areas. The last stage in the formation of the complex was the beginning of the 19th century, when it was planned the erection of the Church. Shopping at this place was visited by a large number of representatives of the monks and pilgrims, which required large spaces, where it was possible to make a Church service and worship, but this building was not. The pilgrims and the brethren prayed before the image of Saint Savvaty and Zosima of Solovki, which is on the wall in Kyoto.
In mid-1818 Holy Synod made a decision to build in the courtyard of the Church, but the idea was not implemented, because most of the priests of the local temples felt completely unnecessary this action, because the compound was near Christmas and the Archangel churches. In 1920 he built a small chapel in the name of Saint Savvaty and Zosima, which were rebuilt retail shops on the first floor.
In the mid-19th century there was a radical replacement of the old wooden structures on stone. Over the years 1851-1853 erected on Bank lane. In 1865 built the room "in the cellar", which was attached from the East to the stone building management services.
The Church in the name of the monk German, Savvaty and Zosima Solovetsky compound in Arkhangelsk was consecrated in the fall of September 17, 1898. The temple was built triceps and had a small bell tower above the entrance, which was addressed to the Daugava embankment. Not only the walls but also the ceiling of the Church were elaborately painted images of the events of Holy saints of Solovki. Icons and paintings of the temple, located in the iconostasis was made monastic painters under the supervision of warden – hieromonk Flavian. The Church iconostasis was made of oak, carved and made looked particularly beautiful.
In 1920 Solovetsky compound was closed and nationalized. In the autumn of 1922, all worship completely stopped. Arkhangelsk town house was restored in 1992, according to the blessing of Alexy II. To date, the Abbot of the Solovetsky monastery in Arkhangelsk is hieromonk of Postolache Stefan.
