National Park Eskel nature reserve, located 25 km South of Bizerte. It is situated close to densely populated areas in the North of Tunisia. Because in these places is the main recreation area and Gnezdovo and migratory waterfowl protection of lakes is required.
First Park Eskel mentioned in the treatises of the thirteenth century. Even then, the dynasty Hatsigov banned the hunting of the lake. Protected status, in the modern sense, the reserve Eskel acquired in 1891. In 1977 UNESCO's world Foundation announced Eskel biosphere reserve. The current boundaries of the Park were determined December 18, 1980 by decree of the President of Tunisia. This date is considered the official creation of the reserve.
The Park has a large lake with an area of 50 sq km, and the hills and limestone mountains with a height of up to 510 m, covered with pistachio and olive trees, junipers. On these mountains migrating and settle permanently living here birds (180 species), swans, ducks and flamingos, including very rare, for example, marbled Teal.
The lake connects with the Mediterranean sea through several artificial canals, which until 2006 in the summer in the water greatly increased the level of salt that threatened many species of animals and plants to serve as food for birds, but this problem is eliminated. Of the animals in the forests of the Park are inhabited by wild boars on the plains buffaloes graze in the shallow waters live otters and turtles.
