South of the Nizhny Novgorod region famous for its caves and karst sinkholes. Picturesque panoramas, rock cliffs, and gorges with steep walls attracting climbers, hikers and nature lovers. One of the unique geologic features are located on the South slope of the watershed of the rivers Serezha and Teshie, in the former village of Plaster, 5, 5 kilometers to the South of the village Balkonien, Arzamas district.

Balakhaninsky cave, with a total area of about 54 hectares, is located on the East side of the old abandoned gypsum quarry, at the foot of the steep wall, with a narrow entrance slit, a length of 2, 5 meters. Arch karst caves in the form of split into separate blocks of the hemisphere is hanging above the main hall and is reflected in the crystal clear water at the bottom of the cave. The walls of the hall because of the constantly low temperature, rises even on the hottest day above 2-3 degrees Celsius, filigree pierced by streams of surface water flowing into the cave through cracks. As a result the natural karst caves of the process formed the stalagmites, stalactites, curtains and columns full of blue-gray ice. From the main hall of the cave razvetvlenno go up a small swallow holes, connected by underground galleries.

The length of the cave is about 48 meters with a maximum height of three meters. In a long corridor Balahaninskoy of the cave there are four formed a shoulder height of more than half a meter. At the entrance to the cave due to above-zero temperatures of the ice wedges melt, forming small stalactites on the polished water the arch.
