Bachkovo monastery is located 29 km away from Plovdiv and in scale, architectural, artistic and cultural value is comparable to the famous Rila monastery. The Holy monastery was founded in the year 1083 by the Byzantine military commander of Georgian origin, Grigorii Bakuriani and his brother Abazii. Originally in the convent were only monks Georgians. But with the year 1344, when came to power, Tsar Ivan-Alexander, appeared here and the monks are Bulgarians. Bachkovo monastery owned large land and was very rich. The Turks destroyed the monastery, but by the end of the XVI century it was restored.
The oldest building in the monastery is the Church of the sepulcher ("ossuary"), built about the year 1083. This is a rare example of Georgian architecture. Building exterior decorative blind arcading. The Church is famous for its frescoes of the XI and XIV centuries. Know the name of the author more ancient paintings – preserved inscription in Greek "Painted this temple from top to bottom by the hand of John Zograf Europalace". In later paintings influenced by the Turnovo school of painting.
The ensemble of the monastery includes the assumption Cathedral, refectory and the Church. The Archangel and the Holy Trinity; all these buildings date from the early seventeenth century. While St. Nicholas was built much later, in 1841. It was painted by a painter Zahari Zograf.
Of particular interest are the frescoes in the refectory of the monastery. It depicts the Greek philosophers Socrates, Diogenes, Aristotle, Sophocles, and others In the Orthodox philosophy, these philosophers are considered pagans and their image are very rare.
In the Museum at the monastery contains numerous gifts donated to the monastery at different times.
