The Acropolis Photo: Acropolis

Famous Acropolis is the main attraction and a business card of the Greek capital, as well as important historical, archaeological and architectural monument (UNESCO world heritage).

The word "Acropolis" from ancient Greek means "upper city" or "fortress". Typically, the Acropolis was built on an inaccessible hill and well strengthened, thus serving as excellent shelter in case of hostilities.

The world famous Acropolis of Athens is an ancient citadel located on top towering over Athens rocky 156-meter hill with many, unfortunately, only partially extant beautiful ancient temples and other structures.

During the archaeological excavations revealed that the hill was inhabited in the 4th Millennium BC, with a high probability was used in the Mycenaean era and was actively built in the archaic period. In 480 BC, during the Greco-Persian war, the Acropolis was thoroughly destroyed by the Persians. New large-scale construction on the Acropolis began in 447 BC, at the initiative of Pericles, and mainly in the structures of this period have been preserved.

Among the most interesting and impressive structures of the Acropolis special attention deserve the monumental Propylaea – marble indoor gate with five passes in the Central part and adjoined on both sides by wings-porticos, one of which once housed the Pinacoteca. The Propylaea is made of white Greek white marble with flecks of darker Eleusinian and harmoniously combines in its architecture the Doric and ionic orders. To the right of the propylaeum, marbled steep rocky ledge, is the Temple of Nicky Apteros.

Of particular interest is the legendary Parthenon is the main temple of Ancient Athens and the splendid monument of ancient architecture, built in honor of the patroness of Athens and the whole of Attica – the goddess Athena. For the construction of the temple was also used white white Greek marble. Decoration was engaged in a famous Greek sculptor Phidias (today some parts of the sculptural masterpieces of his art can be seen in major museums around the world).

No less interesting and unparalleled in ancient Greek architecture, the Erechtheion. Due to the connection of several sanctuaries (Eastern part of the temple was dedicated to the goddess Athena, and the West – Poseidon and the king erechtheus), it has the original asymmetrical layout. The South side is adjacent to the temple of the famous portico of Androsian, the architrave of which back six marble statues of maidens (Caryatid).

On the South-Eastern and southern slopes of the Acropolis and today you can see two ancient theatre of Dionysus is under reconstruction) and the Odeon of Herod Atticus. The latter is used for its intended purpose and in our days, is the main stage of the annual Athens festival.

Definitely worth a visit and located at the foot of the hill the New Acropolis Museum, which opened its doors to visitors in June 2009. A fantastic collection of unique ancient artifacts and architectural fragments collected during the archaeological excavations of the Acropolis of Athens, is considered to be one of the best in the world among such collections.
