One of the most popular tourist centers of Athens, undoubtedly, is situated at the foot of the famous Acropolis is the oldest area of the city called Plaka. This is an incredibly colorful place with a maze of narrow cobbled streets, ancient buildings in the neoclassical style, with an abundance of souvenir shops and cozy cafes, interesting museums and beautiful churches.

Among the most popular and exciting attractions in Plaka it is worth noting one of the many cross-domed temples of Athens, the Russian Church of St. Nicodemus, also known as the Church of the Holy Trinity (or simply "the Russian Church"). The Church is located on the small square near the Parliament building on the street Filellinon, 21.

The Russian Church of St. Nicodemus is one of the largest medieval churches of Athens, preserved to our days. The Church was founded in 1030 by Stefan Located, who actually financed the construction, and was the main Catholicon of the monastery located there. However, it is worth noting that its current appearance of the Church, thoroughly injured by earthquakes, and in the course of hostilities, received after, in 1845, was acquired by the Russian Emperor Nicholas I, who allocated funds for its reconstruction. The decoration of the interior of the temple was entrusted to the famous German artist Ludwig Tirso. Huge impressive bell tower, located to the left of the Church building, was erected somewhat later by the decree of the next Emperor of the Russian Empire - Alexander II.

During the archaeological investigations revealed that the Church was built on the ruins of the early Christian Church, built in turn on the ruins of the Roman baths.

Today, the Church of St. Nicodemus is an important historical and architectural monument of the Byzantine era and is administered by the Russian Orthodox Church.
