Kifissia is a prestigious and one of the most expensive suburbs of Athens. The history of Kifisia dates back to ancient times. This was the home of the famous Greek Comedy of Menander (342-291 BC). During the reign of the Roman Emperor Hadrian, after they built his Villa the famous Herodes Atticus of Marathon, Kifissia became a famous resort of philosophers.
The history of Kifisia in the medieval period is very vague. But there are the remains of the monastery of Panagia Chelidonis that are associated with the story of the battle of the locals with unknown invaders. Monastery chapel is a rare example of a temple, which originally provided for the fireplace and chimney.
A Turkish traveler, who visited here in 1667, during the Ottoman domination, described Kifisou as a small provincial town with three hundred houses with tiled roof in a fertile valley of divine beauty. Half of the population of the city was a Muslim and the other Christian. He noted that there is one mosque without a minaret and a number of small Christian churches (some of them survived until our days).
The temperature in Kifisia are generally lower than in Athens, so after the announcement of the independence of Greece, it quickly became the summer resort of the ruling class. The popularity of this area has declined significantly in the mid-19th century because of the risk of predatory attacks. Nevertheless, the suppression of banditry and the opening of the railway in 1885 led to a sharp development of the region. Build cottages in Kifisia became fashionable for the wealthy Athenian families. The construction of villas with various styles led to the creation of a unique architectural ensemble. It was also built a lot of hotels.
