Cathedral of Aveiro Photo: Cathedral of Aveiro

St. Dominic's Church (founded in 1423), which today is called the Aveiro Cathedral (or the Cathedral of são Domingos), located in the heart of the city, which is often called the Portuguese Venice because of two channels with arched bridges that cross the city of Aveiro.

St. Dominic's Church, formerly located on the territory of the monastery was consecrated in the year 1464. After the ban was imposed on religious orders, the convent was turned into barracks. After some time, the monastery was burned, and the Church, which did not affect the fire, became a Cathedral.

The Baroque portal of the Cathedral is surrounded by four twisted columns and decorated with the image of the three graces, made in 1719. The nave of the Cathedral framed by the window in the shape of an egg. The interior of the Cathedral is amazing works of art, but particular attention is drawn to the cross in the courtyard, built in the Gothic style (end of the 15th century).

During the 16th and 17th centuries was the reconstruction of the Cathedral, which significantly altered the facade of the building. A characteristic feature of the temple is a mix of several architectural styles, namely: mannerism (side chapel), Baroque (high choir, the arches and the cross) and modernism (the transept and the main chapel).

Since 1996 the Cathedral is included in the list of monuments that are of public interest, and the city of Aveiro, a UNESCO world heritage site.
